This technical paper discusses the oil drain frequencies (drain intervals) for heavy duty diesel engines, transmissions, drive line gears and mobile hydraulics as well as for passenger cars and trucks. The reasons for oil replacement, factors affecting oil drain intervals, oil analysis tests that should be considered, and methods of extending oil drain intervals will be covered. Information is presented on the base number retention claims of oils, how oil drain intervals affect rebuild frequencies, and on-board oil monitoring sensor systems.
