Misalignment left uncorrected can have damaging effects on machine components. Misalignment will reduce coupling life, bearing life and overall motor health. It can be a bit confusing when trying to identify misalignment using vibration analysis because the vibration response is often dictated by the mechanical configuration of each machine. Therefore, what appears in the vibration signature for one machine may be completely different for a like machine with a different coupling type. This paper provides a basic understanding of misalignment, the changes in the vibration signature based on the coupling type and what your alignment program should include.
