For instance, the wear debris generated from a system involving gears and bearings may well be quite high initially, particularly if no attempt has been made to 'run-in' the system. Thus there is a gradually reducing level of debris until the system settles in. Then comes the acceptable very low wear rate associated with well lubricated surfaces, which perhaps increases just slightly. Finally, the machine begins to show signs of fatigue or fracture and particle generation increases at an ever increasing rate. These three stages of wear are shown in the classical 'Bath-tub" curve.

"Another changing feature of wear with time, is that the wear rate begins to fluctuate. After the 'running-in' period, the wear rate is expected to be reasonably uniform, although it may rise slightly. However, as conditions begin to become less favourable wear may be less or more in terms of particle size generation as well as with total quantity. Scatter is thus seen as a trend indicator.

"The third sort of trend indication is that associated with the shape of particle - its morphology. This is less easy to measure than the gravimetric level or 'size' of particulate; but, by using the analysis mentioned later in this chapter for defining particle shape, two or more possible specific Bearing Lubrication Advice - One rule of thumb states that, “the service life of grease-lubricated bearings is reduced by half for every 10 degrees C (25 degrees F) increase in temperature above 70 degrees C (160 degrees F).” If, for example, the calculated relubrication interval for a given bearing is 1,000 hours at 70 degrees C, this interval must be cut in half to 500 hours if the operating temperature reaches 80 degrees C. At 90 degrees C, the interval decreases to 250 hours. At 100 degrees C, it further decreases to 125 hours, and so on.

2. Advantages of Synthetic Oils - The two main advantages of synthetic oils are their ability to outperform mineral oils at high operating temperatures, above 80 or 90 degrees C (185 degrees F), and at low operating temperatures, below minus 20 degrees C (0 degrees F).

3. Oil Draining Best Practices - The oil should be drained into a waste oil container while the equipment and oil are still hot and immediately after it has been operated for a couple of hours to ensure that as much debris (wear materials, solids, sludge) is suspended in the oil as possible. Therefore, as much debris as possible will be drained out of the sump. A quality air breather should be used on the equipment housing to fi lter the incoming air as the oil drains out.

<div The particles contained in the lubricating oil carry detailed and important information about the condition of the machine. This information may be deduced from particle shape, composition, size distribution, and concentration.

The Wear Particle Atlas provides information for the identification of various wear particle types, the description of wear modes that generate these particles, the consequences of these wear modes, and description of the techniques that facilitate wear particle analysis.

The Wear Particle Atlas is a guide to wear particle identification containing photographs of typical wear particles found in used lubricating oil, illustrative case histories, and operational procedures for wear debris analysis. Particles also strip the oil of its polar additives, including anti-wear additives, extreme pressure additives, rust inhibitors and dispersants. Also, numerous very small particles in stable suspension can cause the oil's viscosity to increase.

How particles affect the machine - Abrasive particles are responsible for much of the wear leading to premature failure of mechanical components. Under sliding conditions, clearance-sized particles enter the oil film between surfaces and cut away material much like a lathe cuts metal. Under rolling contact conditions, particles transfer concentrated load between two surfaces in relative motion, resulting in surface fatigue, pitting, and spalling. Particle-contaminated oil traveling at high velocity can also cause erosive wear.

2. Rate-of-change alarms are typically set to measure properties that are being progressively introduced into the oil, such as wear debris. The add rate (change) can be calculated per unit of time, hours, cycles, etc. For example, a 100 ppm increase in iron over a period of 100 operating hours could be stated as one ppm per hour of operation. When the parameter is plotted against time, the rate-of-change (add rate) equals the current slope of the curve.

Unlike level limits, rate-of-change limits ignore the absolute value of the data parameter, emphasizing instead the speed at which the level is changing. Rate-of-change limits are effectively applied to particle counting (unfiltered systems), elemental wear metals, ferrous density, acid number (AN) and RPVOT. It can also be effectively applied to monitor abnormal degradation of additives with elemental and FTIR spectroscopy.

3. The amount of water that a given fluid will absorb depends upon its base stock, viscosity, additive package, and temperature. The amount of water that can dissolve in a fluid is termed its saturation level. The saturation level for a hydraulic fluid is 200-300 ppm while for a lubricating oil it is around 500-600 ppm. Oil is cloudy when it is above its saturation level. The saturation level for a synthetic fluid is generally much higher than for a mineral base fluid.

Table Of Contents:

Lubrication Fundamentals

The Functions of a Lubricant

Base Stock Considerations

Lubrication Fundamentals

Additives and their Functions

Oil Analysis and Condition-Based Maintenance

Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM)

Contamination Control

Particle Contamination

Moisture Contamination

Fuel Contamination

Soot Contamination

Glycol Contamination

Oil Sampling Methods

Sampling Locations on System Returns

Live Zone Sampling from Circulating Systems

Sampling from Pressurized Lines

Sampling Wet-sump Circulating Systems

Sampling Non-Circulating Systems

Drop-Tube Vacuum Sampling

Sampling Bottles and Hardware

Important Tips for Effective Oil Sampling

Oil Sampling Frequency

Registering Equipment For Oil Analysis

Sample Bottle Labels and Identification

Oil Testing and Analysis

Reasons for Performing Oil Analysis

Review of Common Used Oil Analysis Tests

Selecting the Test Slate

Targets, Limits, Diagnostics and Data Management

Setting Limits and Targets

Interpreting and Applying Oil Analysis Results

Documenting and Reporting Oil Analysis Results

Integrating Oil Analysis with Other Condition Monitoring Techniques

Guidelines for Selecting and Working with a Commercial Oil Analysis Laboratory

Appendix I - Glossary of Terms

Abbreviations, Prefixes and Letter Symbols

Prefixes - U.S. TERM

Cleanliness Definitions

If you missed the educational sessions at Reliable Plant 2013, you can still get the conference proceedings on CD-ROM. The problem is mutually compounding in that the dirtier the oil the more contaminated the oil continues to become from internal wear debris production and destruction to contaminant exclusion seals. While it is always good advice to maintain clean lubricants from a proactive maintenance standpoint (affirmative action), it is equally good advice for predictive maintenance (early wear detection). A failure to do so usually leads to the alarm signal effectively being "lost in the sauce." This concentrated debris results in a high noise threshold, and when an incipient wear signal occurs it will write "in the noise" and be lost (signal-to-noise is less than 1:1). This is a persistent problem with splash-fed gearing, crankcase lubes, and bath lubricated bearings.

Conversely, a clean oil provides not only a healthy and unabrasive lubricating environment but also allows the wear signal (incipient debris generation) to write above the noise level (signal-to-noise is greater than 2:1, for example). When the fluids are maintained clean and if sampling is carried out in live zones (before filters, on bearing drain lines, and at turbulent fluid zones) the early detection of wear anomalies is typically achieved. There is often a need for the routine use of portable filtration systems or retrofitted side-loop filters.

Author:

Jim Fitch

Format:

Paperback

Included:

Practice Exam
This 125 question multiple-choice practice test is a great self-assessment tool and helps you prepare for both Level I MLT and MLA ICML certification. This paper will present details of this success and others in which it has been proven that even highly contaminated environments can be economically upgraded through the proper use of high performance fluid filtration solutions.

Author: David Kolstad, Porous Media
Source: Lubrication Excellence 2007 Conference Proceedings
Pages: 7
Figures and Illustrations: 15
Format: PDF - Digital Download

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0587/9489/products/technical-paper_t_8dbfe995-eb18-4d5a-a898-d79484087a4e.png?v=1409001581
the-critical-importance-of-maintaining-cleanliness-in-hydraulic-control-systems
The Critical Importance of Maintaining Cleanliness in Hydraulic Control Systems

The benefits of maintaining clean hydraulic control systems have been well established, proven and documented. Traditional methods of analyzing used oils such as viscosity measurement, acidity or carbonyl oxidation is usually inadequate to predict eminent field problems. This presentation discusses why different behavior is observed in the field for turbine oils based on Group I versus Group II base stocks and why there is a range in performance of turbine oils depending on the types of antioxidant systems that are used. A more suitable method for monitoring turbine oil acceptability in the field is to measure depletion of the various antioxidant types present in the system. This approach allows one to more accurately estimate when field problems may occur and provide sufficient time to protect the overall system and extend the lubricants useful life. This is acceptable because there is really no other method available that can reliably produce the required results, and the criminals must be caught. Unfortunately, when an equipment malfunction occurs, many businesses do not conduct such a rigorous analysis of their failed gear. Although predictive maintenance techniques will usually highlight when a failure will occur, it rarely identifies why. In this presentation, we will analyze the methods in place to detect and correct equipment malfunctions and concentrate on the failure analysis process, with a particular focus on proper methods of drilling down to the actual cause of the equipment failure. Attendees will learn what actually causes most failures, why failures often recur, and the proper techniques for efficiently conducting equipment fault analysis. They will be able to take away concrete methods for conducting proper root cause analysis of equipment failures, including equipment troubleshooting plans and methodologies. Several case studies will be provided to show common shortcomings of equipment troubleshooting.

Author: Ken Reed, System Improvements, Inc.
Source: Reliability World 2007 Conference Proceedings
Pages: 5
Figures and Illustrations: 3
Format: PDF - Digital Download

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0587/9489/products/technical-paper_t_bbe9efe6-2b58-4cbd-a990-436983bfcffa.png?v=1409001601
creating-a-lean-but-effective-oil-analysis-program
Creating a Lean but Effective Oil Analysis Program

Whether it's a budget issue, management buy-in, lack of individuals or just a small company with limited funds, there are ways to establish an effective oil analysis program with minimal startup and operation costs.
